For all interlocking projects, we excavate to a depth of 10-14 inches, depending on paver thickness. For driveway borders, we excavate to a depth of 17-21 inches. Our base material of choice is commonly known as High Performance Bedding (HPB). This material is made up of ~6.7mm (~1/4″) stone chips that are washed so that there is no dust in the aggregate material. These chips compact very easily, and allow water to drain freely. This helps to eliminate frost heaving and other potential issues. For deeper excavations (especially driveway borders), we use concrete-based fill, packed well, with an HPB topper. Directly underneath your interlocking stones, we use either a very finely-graded sand or HPB, which allows us to get near-perfect smoothness and levelling of the base.
Afterwards, your pavers are cut and laid on top as needed to create the desired design. Once the lay is complete, a polymeric (hardening) sand is swept and vibrated multiple times into the joints. This step is critical to ensure stability of the pavers and joints as well as protecting from weed breakthrough. Quality polymeric sand, installed properly, lasts for many years and decreases overall required maintenance drastically.

We do all sorts of designs from stone/concrete block. Our base installation, depth, and material used is similar to that of our interlocking projects, without bedding sand. We adhere all blocks using landscaping adhesive to ensure strength and durability.
